Passive Millimeter-Wave Imaging for Security

چکیده
How It Works Unlike X-Ray systems with their ionizing radiation, and active Microwave systems which bathe the subject in RF, passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) imaging systems read the natural thermal energy in environment, much like an infrared camera. Unfortunately, infrared wavelengths are too short to pass through clothing, so we choose a longer wavelength of 3 millimeters (specifically 80 to 100 GHz) to detect and image thermal energy in the environment (see Fig. 1). Heat coming off 100 GHz LNAs and detectors and attention to engineering details make frame-rate whole body passive millimeterwave imaging a reality today.

Super–Resolution Restoration and Image Reconstruction for Passive Millimeter Wave Imaging
According to blackbody radiation theory [1], all substances at a finite absolute temperature will radiate electromagnetic energy. Passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) imaging system forms images by detecting the millimeter-wave radiation energy from the scene and utilizing the differences of the radiation intensity[2,3]. Although such imaging has been performed for decades (or more, if one includes m...
متن کاملDistance Estimation of Concealed Objects with Stereoscopic Passive Millimeter-wave Imaging
Millimeter waves can be used to detect concealed objects because they can penetrate clothing. Therefore, millimeter wave imaging draws increasing attention in security applications for the detection of objects under clothing. In such applications, it is critical to estimate the distances from objects concealed in open spaces. In this paper, we develop a segmentation-based stereo-matching method...
متن کاملShape Feature Analysis of Concealed Objects with Passive Millimeter Wave Imaging
Millimeter wave (MMW) imaging has found rapid adoption in security applications such as concealed object detection under clothing. However, the imaging quality is often degraded due to resolution limit and low signal level. This study addresses shape feature analysis following concealed object detection. The object region is extracted by multi-level segmentation. Shape features are composed of ...
متن کاملA Passive Millimeter-wave Imager Used for Concealed Weapon Detection
An 8mm-band passive millimeter-wave imager BHU-2D has been developed by Beihang University. This imager is designed for detecting concealed weapons on human body. The imager adopts two-dimensional synthetic aperture interferometric radiometer (SAIR) technique which avoids the radiation risk to human body. Compared with scanning technique, SAIR technique could obtain images of a larger field of ...
متن کاملPassive millimeter-wave imaging with compressive sensing
Passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) imagers using a single radio-meter, called single pixel imagers, employ raster scanning to produce images. A serious drawback of such a single pixel imaging system is the long acquisition time needed to produce a high-fidelity image, arising from two factors: (a) the time to scan the whole scene pixel by pixel and (b) the integration time for each pixel to achieve...
